It All Begins With the Farm Workers

If the final destination of a Home-y Made Meal is the stomach of an unhoused neighbor, then the genesis begins at the hands of farm workers. Whether rain or shine, farm workers toil away to raise, tend, and harvest fruits and vegetables that fill all dining tables except their own. The supply chain's linearity has left farm workers' needs in the margins.

To close the supply gap, we reunited with Mily Trevino-Sauceda, co-founder of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas and Lideres Campesinas, and held our third annual Farm Workers Holiday Drive. Within three weeks, 61 individual volunteers and five community organizations – Tree Academy, HopSkipDrive, Iron Mountain, Culture Shock LA, and Roadtrip Nation– compiled over 720 tote bags of essential items for more than 800 farm working families in Coachella Valley and Santa Maria. This is what we mean when we say we are 100% people powered.

The rainstorm did not stop us from distributing our tote bags alongside 20-30 pallets of produce, water, and toys. Seeing farm working families receive the fruits of their labor with gratitude embodies our motto, "serve with joy." Just as children of these families went bananas upon receiving fresh bananas, we hope you take moments to cherish the beautiful produce you see in our markets and dining tables. Food brings people together and it all begins with the farm workers.
