Outreach with Hope Street Distro!
Every quarter the Home-y Made Meals Ops team joins one of our coalition partners for their outreach and last month we were welcomed by the ladies over at Hope Street Distro!
On a hot summer Sunday, we gathered on a sidewalk, loaded meals, collected donated clothes/hygiene supplies, and readied frozen waters. From the getgo they informed us on what to expect, which areas they’ve been supporting, the impact of 41.18 sweeps, and specific needs of neighbors they’ve been in community with. As we went around sharing what we had and connecting with folks, we were feeling a range of heartbreaking, infuriating, and invigorating emotions seeing our taxpayer funded efforts continue to fall short and mutual aid efforts continue to fill the gap. It’s evident we need more housing. We need more affordability and prevention. We need more mutual aid. We need more care, not cops.
Homelessness has been in the news a lot lately, and we’re reminded understanding is incomplete without proximity (check out an Inside Safe audit, the Supreme Court’s Grants Pass ruling, and the report back on 41.18. Personalize these words by plugging into your local outreach group, and if you’re in the downtown area definitely reach out to the beautiful people at Hope Street Distro!
